Committee of the Regions (CoR)
CoR was established in 1994 as a political assembly that provides local and regional authorities with a voice at the heart of the EU. It was set up to address two main issues:
- Ensuring that local and regional representatives have a say in the development of new EU laws.
- Ensuring that EU citizens feel involved.
The body organises its work through six specialist Commissions who examine the detail of proposals and draw up a draft opinion. The draft opinion is then discussed at a plenary and if a majority approves it, the draft is adopted as the opinion of the CoR and is sent back to the Commission for transfer to the Parliament and Council.
